OFCOM General Notice Issued
11 Dec 2023
Today, OFCOM have issued a General Notice relating to the changes they are making to all Amateur licences, as a result of their recent consultation.
The announcement has been made on the OFCOM website today:
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2023/future-proofing-amateur-radio
Unfortunately, they are going ahead with their ridiculous proposal of making the use of RSLs optional!!
This is likely to result in GW/GM/GI/GD/GJ/GU losing their separate DXCC status.
You can download the full official notice document as a PDF file here:

A Message from the RSGB Region 6 Rep.
05 Dec 2023
We have received another update from the RSGB Regional Representative for North Wales:-
" Xmas update for clubs
I can't believe where this year has gone and here we are entering the Festive Season and approaching 2024.
It's been a mixed year with successes and some not so good parts. Once again, we have said goodbye to a number of good friends who have gone SK.
The ongoing effects post Covid still seem to haunt us. It would appear that this is not confined to North Wales but UK wide.
Clubs closing due to losing their venues and Members who seem to prefer the home comforts of Zoom and similar platforms rather than make the effort to attend Club meetings.
That said, we have an ever-increasing number of older Hams who are not happy to drive in winter in the dark or have other issues.
Also, there are Clubs that have joined together due to lack of attending Members to make the Clubs viable.
Some Clubs are thriving and we can only hope that will increase.
On the bright side there have been a lot of activities, SES's, contests and other events.
RAYNET have also been very busy, not only doing the usual mountain activities support but also other activities.
They have certainly flourished in Region 6 recently.
This year the post of GB2RS local news reader became vacant and Brian GW6 VEI has taken up the role assisted by Hugh GW0WWQ.
I have been in contact with Steve Richards G4HPE ( the coordinator for GB2RS) as there is no reader at all in South Wales.
Brian can cover most of the South but, with a much larger population in South Wales, I'm sure there must be someone.
I've passed this over to the RR for Region 7. A big thank you to Brian and Hugh for taking up the role.
Finally, after 3 years as RR6, I am required to stand for election for the remaining 3 years.
I've actually done 4 years as I was co-opted in 2020.
I've lost count of the times I've returned to the role but I've been involved as Regional Manager/ Regional Rep or Deputy RR for nearly 25 years.
I will resign at the RSGB AGM in April from the role of RR6. So, thinking caps on please about a replacement.
The last few years have been challenging and I'm not getting any younger.
Some health issues are slowing me down and I don't think I can continue to give support to the role it deserves.
I will remain as Deputy RR for Conwy and Denbigh.
It just remains for me to wish you all the best for the Festive Season and good health and happiness for the New Year 2024

Meet-up & natter social evening
15 Sep 2023
Many thanks to all who attended our club social gathering this evening.
A very pleasant evening was had,
with GW4HDR, MW0IDX, GW4CQZ, GW4RWR, GW6VEI, GW0WWQ, MW3BJI, GW7EXH, GW0ETU (RSGB Rep.) and John GW3JGA (one of the founding members of the club).
Apologies for absence from GW8NZN, GW6ITJ and GW4PJQ.
Thanks to Martyn CQZ for bringing his home made magnetic loop, and Barrie EXH for bringing his new 23cms antenna, for us to look at and discuss.
Everyone enjoyed the evening, but all agreed that the venue was far too noisy!.
Yes, Friday may be their “quietest” evening, there were only about 6 other customers apart from us - but,
they neglected to mention the disco in the room next door, plus the TVs were far too loud.
I think next time we need to find a quieter venue, perhaps in or around St Asaph which may be more central,
given the geographic spread of the people who attended.
If anyone can think of a suitable (free) venue, (preferably one that serves tea/coffee as well as cold drinks),
or if anyone would like to help arrange the next one, please contact us
Meet-up & natter social evening
Fri 15th Sept 2023 at 7:30pm
07 Sep 2023
We are having another informal Meet-up & natter social evening,
on Friday 15th Sept 2023 at 7:30pm, at the Rhyl Rugby Club Sports & Social Club, Tynewydd Road, Rhyl, LL18 4AQ.
This is open to all local Radio Amateurs, not just club members.
Why not come along and say hello, it will be good to see you.
(If anyone wants my mobile number in case you get lost, please send a message using the
contact us page)
For more information please see our Facebook page, or contact us directly.
Hope to see you there…
OFCOM Amateur Radio consultation
27 Aug 2023
Just a reminder that the responses to OFCOM's Amateur Radio Licencing consultation need to be in by Sept 4th.
I've sent mine off today. This is our only chance to voice our opinions on these proposals, so don't miss your chance.
Personally I agree with most of the proposals, except the making of RSL (country indicators, e.g. GW GI GM etc.) optional,
I strongly disagree with that one! And I also think that the use of suffixes like /M /P /MM should be retained and made mandatory again – but that’s only my opinion!
But whatever your opinion, if you want to be heard, you need to complete the consultation form and return it to
amateur.radio.review@ofcom.org.uk to be received before 4th Sept.
If you haven't already read the consultation document, it is available here - OFCOM consultation Amateur Radio Review
and the response form is available here - OFCOM consultation Response form
Social meet-up & natter evening
27 Aug 2023
We are trying to arrange another social meet-up and natter evening in the very near future, as we haven’t had one for a while. This will be open to all local radio amateurs, you do not have to be a club member. Full details will be posted here as soon as they are finalised.
A Message from the RSGB Region 6 Rep.
17 Aug 2023
We have received an update from the RSGB Regional Representative for North Wales:-
"Summer Update
Hi All,
This, at times over the last month, could have been described as a Soggy Update although the past few days the WX has improved.
Clubs seem to be getting more settled and out and about with SES's, as this weekend with Lighthouses on the Air with only 2 stations I have heard of DragonARC,
operating from the Coastguard Station at Trwyn Du /Penmon Lighthouse and Holy Island ARC operating from Holyhead.
Hopefully, there are others but I haven't heard so far... we do have a lot of coastline and lighthouses!!
Other activities have included BBQ's, WX permitting, and Raynet have been busy with the usual events they cover.
As for visits, myself rr6@rsgb.org.uk, Mark dr61@rsgb.org.uk, John dr63@rsgb.org.uk and Ray dr64@rsgb.org.uk are all happy to visit the Clubs in their districts
whether to do the RSGB talks or just to see how you are getting on and whether RSGB can be of any help.
Please note that I'm covering dr62@rsgb.org.uk.
Also, at the moment John and Ray have a technical problem and are not getting their incoming emails.
IT at RSGB are aware of this and hopefully it will be resolved soon.
Meanwhile, please refer to their contact details on the website or yearbook.
Now to the really important bit... THE OFCOM CONSULTATION.
Hopefully, all Clubs are aware of this and time is running out. The date of closure is the 4th September 2023.
It is imperative that you do this. It's no good moaning about OFCOM & RSGB after the event.
This is your opportunity to have your say both as a Club and an individual.
In fact, you do not have to be a licensed amateur to take part, anyone is eligible ... but please, not your dog or cat HiHi.
There is an article in the August edition of RadCom on Page 11.
On the RSGB website there is a guide to help you decide how to reply but leaving you to make up your own mind.
Also, there are articles and presentations on U Tube and "Tonight at 8" and other platforms too.
A number of Clubs have given over a meeting to go through it and discuss.
There are many items to debate and some controversial ones... eg The Regional Locator one !!
Please don't forget this is IMPORTANT.
A final item... I heard yesterday that Hugh Burton GW0WWQ, QTH Bodfari, is going to be the back up newsreader for GB2RS helping Brian GW6VEI.
This will be on HF at10.30am local on Sundays on 3650Mhz Ssb.
The coverage should be most of North & Mid Wales but will include local news for South Wales as well so I'm told.
Well, that all for now. Please do keep in contact and let me know if we can be of any help, pass on your news and send out some invites.

GB2RS News from North Wales
15 Aug 2023
Following Brian GW6VEI's successful first reading of the Sunday morning GB2RS News from here in North Wales,
Hugh GW0WWQ has been in touch to let us know he has volunteered to assist Brian by being his reserve/backup reader,
to cover the odd instance when Brian may not be available.
Hugh is located in Bodfari, only a few miles from Brian, so his coverage should be very similar.
As a reminder – GB2RS News for North and Mid Wales:
- 10:30AM every Sunday on 3.650MHz SSB
- Main reader GW6VEI Tremeirchion, St Asaph
- Backup reader GW0WWQ Bodfari, Denbigh
Perseid meteor shower 2003 report
13 Aug 2023
This year's Perseid meteor shower seemed to be particularly good.
GW4HDR in Rhyl left his 2m station running overnight 12-13th Aug, monitoring the Meteor Scatter activity on 144.360MHz, using MSK144 mode.
This coincided with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
The map shows the stations that were heard calling CQ over this period, using a simple omnidirectional horizontally polarised halo antenna.
The stations in the UK and Eire were probably "tropo" propagation, and there was a short period of strong "Es"
(Sporadic E) propagation during the evening, so not all of the stations heard were meteor reflections.
But the map shows the sort of ranges that can be easily achieved on 144MHz using MSK144 on a relatively poor antenna.
Best DX heard was YU7PS in Serbia, at a distance of 1204 miles.
The activity level this year seemed to be better than this time last year.
GB2RS News transmissions from Nth. Wales - Update
06 Aug 2023
Brian GW6VEI has been in touch to say that his main rig has now been repaired, so we are pleased to announce that
the regular Sunday GB2RS News Bulletin will be transmitted from here in North Wales, for the first time in many years.
Brian (Doug) GW6VEI (located near Tremeirchion, St Asaph), will be reading the GB2RS News at 10:30AM every Sunday,
on 3.650MHz, starting from Sunday 13th August 2023.
Brian would like as many reception reports as possible, from local stations and those further afield,
so please call in after the News has finished if you possibly can and give him a report.
GB2RS News broadcasts from North Wales
03 Jul 2023
It has now been confirmed that the regular Sunday GB2RS News Bulletin will be transmitted from here in North Wales again!
Brian GW6VEI (located near Tremeirchion, St Asaph), will be reading the GB2RS News at 10:30AM every Sunday,
on 3.650MHz, starting from Sunday 16th July 2023.
Reception reports will be very welcome, so please call in after the News has finished.
** Note added 7 July: Unfortunately, due to a rig failure, Brian has had to postpone his 1st GB2RS News broadcast.
(Although he has other rigs, they are not really suitable for a constant 30mins broadcast)
As there is no reserve reader for North Wales at this present time, he has to wait for it to be repaired before he can commence the GB2RS broadcasts.
The promised turn-round time for the repair of his main rig is around 6 to 8 weeks.
We will post a note here as soon as we have a new start date. **
Please note that a reserve/backup news reader is still required, to cover for Brian on the few occasions that he may not be available.
If you have 80m capabilities, are free on Sundays, and would like to volunteer to become a reserve news reader to assist Brian,
please contact us and we will put you in touch with him.
VHF National Field Day 2023
26 Jun 2023
This coming weekend is the VHF Nationald Field Day (VHF NFD)
1400 UTC Saturday 1st July 2023 until 1400 UTC Sunday 2nd July 2023.
Bands: 50MHz, 70MHz, 144MHz, 432MHz & 1.3GHz All modes
Although the club is not putting on a station this year, this is one of the biggest VHF/UHF contests of the year, so there should be lots of activity on the bands.
Full rules and other information available here: VHF NFD 2023
Reserve GB2RS News reader required for North Wales
25 Jun 2023
As Wales, particularly North Wales, is not currently well represented by GB2RS news readers,
Brian, GW6VEI, has kindly volunteered to become an RSGB GB2RS news reader for our area, probably on the 80m band.
Unfortunately, the other stations that were considering being reserve news readers to back up his application, have had to pull out for various reasons.
We need a reserve News reader to back Brian up, to read the news on the few/rare occasions that Brian may be away or indisposed due to illness.
If you have 80m capabilities, are free on Sundays, and would like to volunteer to become a reserve news reader to assist Brian,
please contact us and we will put you in touch with Brian.
If we cannot get a reserve reader, he will have to drop his application, which will be a great shame.
** OFCOM Amateur Radio Consultation **
23 Jun 2023
Today, OFCOM have released their consultation document containing their proposals for changes to the UK Amateur Radio Licence.
If you have not already had your copy, you can download the PDF file here:
OFCOM consultation Amateur Radio Review
It contains some very interesting proposals, most we agree with, some we don't...
GB2RS News broadcasts from North Wales
21 Jun 2023
It is hoped that the regular Sunday GB2RS News Bulletin may be transmitted from here in North Wales again.
A group of local operators are presently in the process of arranging this with the RSGB news manager.
This is a welcome development, as Wales, particularly North Wales, is not currently well represented by news readers.
Details of the stations, frequency, and times will be posted here once the details have been finalised.
Practical Wireless 144MHz QRP Contest
05 Jun 2023
The 40th annual "Practical Wireless" 144 MHz QRP Contest will take place on:
Sunday 11th June 2023 at 0900 - 1500 UTC (10AM to 4pm BST)
144MHz SSB/CW/FM/AM (NO digital voice or datamodes). Maximum transmitter power 5W PEP. Fixed or Portable stations.
QSO exchange: RS(T) report, serial number starting 001, QTH locator.

This contest used to be a firm favourite with club members, as it is a fairly relaxed contest, with no QRM from high power stations.
A Message from the RSGB Region 6 Rep.
25 May 2023
We have received an update from the RSGB Regional Representative for North Wales:-
"Summer Update
Hi All,
Well, I suppose it's officially Summer next month which is nearly upon us.
I hope you are all well and free of winter bugs and Covid, which is still about despite what the experts say..
A few points of interests and concern.
Firstly, John GW0AQR has recently retired from GB2RS. I have put the word around to find a replacement but no luck so far.
If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in doing this please contact me, so I can point you in the right direction to apply.
John has read the news for many years so many TNX go to him for his dedication.
The Coronation of King Charles 3rd had some Clubs doing SES's and individuals as well.
WX wise, it was a good weekend here, unlike the actual event in London!
The new Regional Facebook pages have gone live recently with mixed responses.
A number of RR's were not in favour, myself included, but it's there to ask questions and make comments etc.
I have not, as yet, joined, I'm waiting to see how it goes.
The Moderator informs me of anything relevant.
Most Clubs have Facebook pages and there are so many forums and other forms of Social Media you could waste your life doing it.
Generally, it's a mixed picture in R6 Clubs.
Some are doing well, with good numbers returning to Face to Face meetings after Covid but others are struggling.
No doubt some people are happy to stay at home and do virtual meetings.
Unfortunately, Porthmadog & DARS has closed. They were unable to return to the Yacht Club after Covid and numbers were down to 3.
It's sad that this has happened to such a longstanding Club.
The joining of Wrexham & Marches ARS is continuing but the numbers are still not great.
Halkyn ARG have set up a new Shack adjacent to their Club meeting place.
I'm hearing about a lot of SES's and activities over the summer which is good.
Raynet are generally busy with the usual annual events.
Let's hope that these positive trends continue. I wish you all a good summer and good health.

RSGB Affiliated Clubs Newsletter (June 2023)
20 May 2023
The latest RSGB newsletter for affiliated clubs (for June 2023) has now been released. It is available for download here:
RSGB Affiliated Clubs Newsletter June 2023
It appears that everything that is included in these newsletters is also in Radcom.
As the RSGB newsletters are always emailed to club secretaries around the same date as RSGB members receive their Radcom,
we’ve realised that they are of little use to anyone who is already a member of the RSGB.
As they may be of interest to any non-RSGB members we will continue to put them on the
RSGB Newsletter page
just in case anyone wants to read what’s going on in our region..
Demo of Packet Radio through the “Greencube” satellite.
13 May 2023
As Rob G(W)0MOH was visiting family in the area, he offered to give a demonstration of how to use the Packet Radio digipeater on board the “Greencube” (IO-117) satellite,
which orbits the earth at a respectable 5,800km from Earth, and which also contains a digipeater running on 435.310MHz (+/- Doppler).
He opted to do this from the nearby IO73 square, as it is much rarer than our IO83 square, which also covers Liverpool and Manchester etc..
We picked a site near Llandegai, just off the A55, as it was just inside IO73, and had a good view of the horizon in the directions of interest.
The demo was arranged for Sat 13May, as there was a suitable satellite pass at around lunchtime, which would last about an hour and 15minutes
(as the satellite is so high up, the pass times are quite long).
We arrived there in plenty of time, and Rob set-up and tested the gear.
He had already posted his intention to activate IO73 on various satellite forums,
so we knew there would be plenty of people from all over the world waiting to work us desperate for IO73 square.
(The satellite footprint is so large it is possible to work into Japan from the UK through it – not bad for 70cms!)
Antennas aligned, automatic Doppler correction tested, everything was ready.
The satellite came into range, we could hear the telemetry packets from it, so we put out a few calls….
And.... nothing!! – No replies at all. We could not even hear other QSOs through the satellite.
We knew the antenna was aligned correctly as we could hear the telemetry packets fine.
Rob spent ages checking and double checking everything, and everything appeared to be working perfectly.
After about half an hour he checked on the satellite forums, and discovered that the operators had switched the satellite into telemetry only mode!!!
(This is very rarely done, and is usually done due to low battery power when they wish to allow the charge to build up again from the solar panels)
The day wasn’t a complete loss though, as it was interesting to see the set-up (both hardware and software),
and we were able to conclusively prove Murphy’s Law: “anything that can go wrong, will”

"145 Alive" event Sat 29 April
24 Apr 2023
This coming Saturday 29 April is the second "145 Alive" event, designed to increase activity on 2m FM.
The event will run from 1pm to 3pm local time.
Various net controllers will be setting up on high spots throughout the country, and inviting people to call in,
not just to work the net controller, but to work anyone/everybody.
The idea behind the event is to increase activity on the band, by showing what can be done on 2m without using repeaters etc.
There will be two stations active near us: Simon MW0NWM will be on high ground overlooking Caernarfon, IO73VC, on 145.375MHz, and
Phil 2E0DGP will be active from Lancashire, on 145.300MHz
Please call in if you can, and help make this event a success.
Large CME hits earth - HF Blackout
23 Apr 2023
The recent Coronal Mass Ejection has hit Earth around tea time today, a little earlier than expected.
This is currently causing a Severe (G4) geomagnetic storm.
Propagation on the HF bands appears to have been totally wiped out, and a low latitude Aurora has been predicted, which may be visible from most of the UK.
Although the HF bands are currently dead, there is a very good chance of enhanced Auroral propagation on 28/50/70/144MHz so point your beams North if you can.
As this Solar Storm is so severe, there may even be disruption to GPS navigation and timing systems, and possible tripping out of some power distribution lines.
The UK mobile phone system relies on extremely accurate timing from GPS receivers so we may even experience mobile connectivity issues too.
The effects of this CME impact may last several days, before things start to get back to normal.
EuCW QRS ACTIVITY WEEK
22 Apr 2023
This coming week 24-28 April (Monday to Friday) is the annual EuCW QRS Activity Week.
This is not a contest, but a week-long activity intended to encourage newcomers to CW.
Speeds no greater than 14wpm, real signal reports, and minimum QSO duration of 5 minutes
(i.e. no 599 TU next please type contacts).
This is a great opportunity to build up your confidence in using CW on air, or to help CW newcomers to do so.

A Message from the RSGB Region 6 Rep.
04 Jan 2023
We have received a New Year update from the RSGB Regional Representative for North Wales:-
"New Year Update
BLWYDDYN NEWYDD DDA
A very Happy New Year 2023 to everyone in Region 6. 2022 was a bit of a mixed year with the hang over from Covid and the awful events in Europe and beyond, not to mention the current ongoing problems we are facing at home. Let's hope that 2023 turns out better all round.
So to an update.... some of this was mentioned in my previous missive.
The footfall at some Clubs continues to be a problem.
Some Clubs have had to find new premises for their meetings and two clubs had to join together to make meetings viable and be be able to keep going.
lt would seem that after two years of virtual meetings, some Clubs have found that members prefer to continue that way
...or have they just got out of the habit of face to face meetings.
Of course, there is still Covid lurking plus an epidemic of Flu at the moment so, it's understandable that,
where there is a vulnerable person in the household, they are reluctant to be in the company of a number of people.
Some Clubs have recovered well and have a healthy memberships so let's hope this trend continues in 2023.
We have lost Clubs for various reasons, the main one being the numbers of members who have gone SK in recent years
or having health issues and are unable to attend in person..
The dwindling numbers have made the Clubs not viable.
Hopefully, when the WX gets better, we can look forward to having more outdoor activities and SES's..
2022 saw many such activities and perhaps the Highlight was GB70W., the official Welsh station, which was assigned to North Wales.
Dragon ARC took on the task of organising the station and put on a great set-up on Ynys Mon.
Thanks to Les MW0SEC who allowed the Club to use his field.
Over the 5 days of operating over the Jubilee weekend we had many visitors and a number of operators.
We continued to the scheduled end despite very inclement WX over the actual weekend !
I don't think anyone expected, only a few months later, the sudden and sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2nd,
leaving us to join her beloved Husband, the late Patron of RSGB for many years, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
I wish you all a good year 2023, with good health and happiness
Liz
