New club secretary – Nigel MW0NDE
(Posted 19 February 2026)
Nigel MW0NDE has very kindly volunteered to take over the role of club secretary from GW4HDR.
Nigel is now the central point of contact for all things club related.
GW4HDR will still be available as committee member (and website editor) to back Nigel up,
but all future enquires about the club and its activities should now be directed to Nigel.
Many thanks Nigel.
Breakfast meeting

Hope to see you there.
New club secretary required
(Posted 11 February 2026)
Due to increasing family commitments and health problems, GW4HDR has asked to stand down from the role of club secretary.
We need a volunteer to take over as secretary as soon as possible.
The club operates on an informal basis so there isn't much to do, but we do need to have a secretary if the club is to continue.
If you think you can help by volunteering to act as club secretary, please contact us.
GW4HDR will assist and advise you as much as possible.
Please contact us if you think you can help.
"145 Alive" event Sat 07 February
(Posted 05 February 2026)
This coming Saturday 07 February is the latest "145 Alive" event, designed to increase activity on 2m.
This particular event is the first one to include 144MHz SSB, which makes it of particular interest to our club members.
The event will run from 12noon to 3pm local time.
Various net controllers will be setting up on high spots throughout the country, and inviting people to call in,
not just to work the net controller, but to work anyone/everybody.
The idea behind the event is to increase activity on the band, by showing what can be done on 2m without using repeaters or internet gateways etc.
Our club will be putting up a portable station (GW4ARC/P) on high ground on the Denbigh moors,
in grid IO83fc, to take part in the SSB section.
As per the recommendations from the organisers, we will be using vertical polarization on SSB.
We have not been allocated our own frequency by the organisers due to their rather strange rule of only allowing one SSB station in each large grid square!.
As there would be no SSB nets at all in the whole of Wales!, we have decided to run our own anyway.
We will be approx. 50miles from the official net for IO83 square so we are far enough away to not cause any problems.
After working as many of the other nets as possible, we intend to just call CQ on the calling frequency 144.300,
and will QSY to one of the unallocated frequencies to make as many contacts as we can.
Please call in if you can, and help make this event a success.

RSGB Cymru / Wales February 40m Challenge

Our Region 6 RSGB Rep. Simon Taylor has reminded us about the upcoming Welsh 40m challenge, which takes place throughout the month of February:
"Throughout the whole of February, the RSGB in Wales are running a friendly 7MHz 40M Operating Challenge.
This is a simple challenge which is open to all RSGB members in Cymru and members of RSGB Affiliated clubs in Wales.
Please do take a look at the link below which tells you how to take part.
One important thing to note is that you can enter more than one category if you wish to do so!"

1st breakfast meeting report
(Posted 17 January 2026)
Thanks to all that attended our first “breakfast meeting” at the Rhyl Rugby Club this morning -
GW0HUS, GW1GOE, MW0NDE, MW3WAH, GW8NZN, GW0WWQ, MW3BJI and GW4HDR.
Everyone who went seemed to think it was a success, the venue wasn’t too busy, and the food was nice and reasonably priced.
People seemed to like having a daytime meet-up, as some don’t particularly like driving at night, or simply feel too tired sometimes in the evenings. –
So we are going to make it a regular thing, at least for a few months, to see how things go.
So as well as our normal evening meeting in the Yacht Club on the 1st Weds of every month,
we are now going to have a morning breakfast meeting at the Rugby Club on the 3rd Saturday of every month.
Please feel free to attend either or both of these meetings...
Morning breakfast meeting 17 Jan
(Posted 12 January 2026)
Further to the recent discussions both on air and our club Facebook page, we are proposing to try a one-off breakfast meeting this coming
Saturday, 17th January, at 10AM, at the Rhyl Rugby Club, Tynewydd Road, Rhyl.
According to the manager, the Rugby Club is busier on a Saturday as they have training sessions,
but this affects the car park and the sports field more than the café area (it’s a large car park).
So if we meet earlier rather than later, there shouldn’t be a problem, hence the suggestion we meet at 10AM.
Assuming all goes well, the venue isn’t too busy, and everyone is happy with it, then we could make this a regular once-monthly event –
possibly on the 3rd Saturday of the month to space it away from our normal 1st Weds evening meetings.
If we decide to go ahead and make it monthly then we could phone and book tables together if we have a rough idea of numbers each month.
Please come along this Saturday morning if you can..
January Club meeting Weds 07Jan2026
(Posted 06 January 2026)
Just a reminder that our next club meting is tomorrow,
Wednesday, 7th January, at 7:30pm, at the usual venue of Rhyl Yacht Club building,
Horton Nose Lane, Kinmel Bay, Rhyl LL18 5AR (just on the Kinmel Bay side of the blue Foryd Bridge)
I guess that the current snowy and icy weather may prevent some of our more distant members from coming along.
Hopefully the heating will be working properly tomorrow too, as it was very cold last meeting!
Hope to see you there..
Extra morning club meetings?
(Posted 02 January 2026)
As you know the club meets one evening a month in the Yacht Club building. (Reminder - Next meeting is next Wednesday 7th Jan!).
Would there be any interest in having another meeting, say a breakfast meeting in a quiet café, one morning a month??
This has been brought up more than once in recent months.
There are plenty of café’s that may benefit from the extra custom, and we could meet for a chat over a cuppa and/or a breakfast?
Both Morrison's supermarket café and the Rugby Club in Rhyl are fairly quiet in the mornings, and serve both tea/coffees and breakfasts.
We realise a morning meeting wouldn’t suit everyone due to work etc., but quite a few of us are happily retired.
Would there be any interest in this?, I guess we would need at least 3 or 4 regulars to make it worthwhile? – Any thoughts on this?

New Years Day 2m SSB activity sessions
(Posted 01 January 2026)
Happy New Year to all!
Many thanks to all that joined in the vertical 2m SSB sessions today.
The afternoon session was well supported with 6 of us on – GW0WWQ, MW0NDE, MW0GBR/P, GW7EXH, GW4CQZ, & GW4HDR.
The evening session was just Alan HDR and Barrie EXH, until we were joined by G8CCD in Liverpool.
John G8CCD had come on just after 8pm especially for the event, called CQ for a while but got no replies.
He then tuned around and found us on .310 so joined in with us for a while.
Thanks again to all that joined in...

The RSGB also send a monthly newsletter to all affiliated clubs, for onward distribution to club members.
(It appears that everything that is included in these newsletters is also in "Radcom".
These newsletters are always emailed to club secretaries around the same date as RSGB members receive their Radcom,
so we’ve realised that they are of little use to anyone who is already a member of the RSGB.
However, as they may be of interest to non-RSGB members we will continue to put them on our website every month.)
