New Years Day 2m SSB activity sessions

(Posted 29 December 2025)

Following on from the previous post, and the subsequent discussions both on-air and on the club Facebook page, the Club is proposing to hold a couple of 144MHz SSB activity sessions on New Year’s Day.

We suggest meeting on the 2m SSB calling frequency 144.300MHz at about 2.30PM, and immediately QSY to a working frequency (we suggest 144.310 if it is not already in use)

This is not a contest or a formal net, there are no rules or even exact times, just come on and join us if you fancy a chat, and help promote activity on 2m SSB. If you miss us on the calling frequency, have a tune around, between about 144.200 to 144.360, to see if we have already QSYd. Use whatever antenna you have, most of us will just be using verticals.

Our main session will be from 2:30PM, but as the original RadCom suggestion was for 8PM, some of us will also be on around 8PM in case there is any activity from other clubs.

Hope to chat with you then..

Vertical 2m SSB net 1st Jan at 8PM

(Posted 20 December 2025)

As per the suggestion in the January 2026 edition of Radcom, (page 56), would there be any interest in us having a club net on 144MHz SSB, vertically polarised, at 8pm on Thursday 1st January??

There is already a certain amount of activity on 2m SSB locally, mainly using simple vertically polarised antennas, but anything that may help promote more activity has got to be welcomed.

Please let us know if you would be interested in joining in to an informal SSB net on New Years Day...

(Thank you to Hugh GW0WWQ for bringing this to our attention)

Update from our RSGB Region 6 Rep.

(Posted 24 Aug 2025)

Radio Society of Great Britain We have received another update from Simon MW0NWM, the RSGB Regional Representative for Region 6:-

" RSGB Region 6 News

Dear RSGB Region 6 (North Wales) Amateur Radio Clubs and RSGB Members,

I hope that you are all keeping well and have found time to enjoy the amateur radio hobby over the summer. Have you taken part in a special event? Have you taken part in a major HF or V/UHF contest? Have you been experimenting on the microwave bands? Has your club held a summer field day or BBQ?
Do let me know of your radio adventures, post about them on the R6 Facebook Group and do submit your news to the RadCom editorial team!

A while ago I mentioned that we shall be running a RSGB Cymru / Wales 7MHz Operating Challenge this autumn. This will take place throughout November, not October as had been originally discussed. Full details will be issued in the coming week or so.

I was pleased to be able to attend the AGM of the Arfon Repeater Group recently, it was great to hear first hand the hard work which goes into developing and maintaining a repeater network. I urge you to make use of your local repeaters and join your local repeater group. The repeater network costs money to maintain, so your membership would be very much appreciated!

Amateur Radio Tabletop Sale & Bring and buy
The joint North Wales Amateur Radio Group and Halkyn ARG table-top sale and bring & buy takes place on Sunday 31 August, 11am - 3pm, at Bryn Cadno Community Centre, Colwyn Bay, Conwy LL29 6DW.
Pick up some radio gear, or sell some of your own.
RSGB Region 6 team will be in attendance.
Entry is £1 (NWARG /Halkyn Radio Group members free)
FFI and to book a table, email stuart@nwarg.org

Finally, myself and the whole R6 RSGB Team are here to support you in any way we can. Please do contact us if we can be of any assistance. Our contact details can be found at the following webpage: Region 6 Team - Radio Society of Great Britain

Next Club Meeting is Weds 6th Aug 2025

(Posted 02 August 2025)

Our next club meeting is next Wednesday, 6th August, at 7:30 pm, in the usual venue of Rhyl Yacht Club, Horton Nose Lane, Kinmel Bay, Rhyl LL18 5AR (just on the Kinmel Bay side of the blue Foryd Bridge)

Martyn GW4CQX will be bringing another of his home-brew magnetic loops to show us, and Dave MW1DSB will be bringing a vintage hybrid Yaesu HF radio, in the hope that someone can help him work out what crystal frequency he would need to enable one of the WARC bands.

Hope to see you all there.

(Edit added 08 August 2025)
Martyn CQZ h/b Mag Loop

Martyn GW4CQZ brought along one of his home made magnetic loops to show us.

This is his "fat" mag loop.

This loop uses Cellflex 1 5/8" feeder, and is around 4 ft in diameter, with motorised tuning and a rotatable coupling loop.

Martyn is shown here checking the loop with his Nano-VNA.

He took it outside, as he suspected that the proximity of the low fluorescent tubes and associated mains wiring inside the building may have been affecting the tuning of the loop.

[Thanks Roger MW0IDX for the photo]

Peter GW0ETN SK

(Posted 24 July 2025)

Although Peter had not been active on Amateur Radio in more recent years, he was a member of the club for many years. He operated mainly on 2m FM and used to regularly take part in our club nets and other activities. He will be sadly missed, RIP Peter SK.

VHF Contests this weekend

(Posted 04 July 2025)

This weekend has two VHF contests – VHF NFD (National Field Day) 14:00UTC Sat 5th July till 14:00UTC Sun 6th July, and also the 3rd 144MHz Backpackers contest 11:00 till 15:00UTC Sun 6th July.

There should be pletnty of activity on all the VHF bands 6m/4m/2m/70cm/23cm, but 2m should be particularly busy.

If you are equipped for multi-mode VHF and want to do more than just sit on your favourite repeater channel, this is a good opportunity to go on air and work a few contest stations, giving them a few points as you go.

Full details are available at VHF National Field Day 2025 Rules, and

Meeting 05 March 25

(Posted 06 Mar 2025)

Picture 001 Thanks to Nigel M0NDE/MW0NDE for bringing in some of his recent home-brew projects to show us at the club meeting yesterday.

Picture 002 Nigel brought along various recent projects including his latest Magnetic loop, a replica Paraset, a neat little SSTV decoder/display based on a Raspberry Pi, a small auto-ATU, and a little PIC baced device he uses in his camper van. He demonstrated the loop receiving FT8 indoors on 40m, using his little IC-705.

Picture 003 It’s no wonder he doesn't get much time to come on the air building that lot.
It has inspired me to build another magnetic loop, and perhaps to get my old Raspberry Pi out of the cupboard and do something with that again..

Picture 004

Thanks to all that attended, to Ceri 2W0LJC for taking a few photos, to Graham GW0HUS for bring some of his QST magazines, and especially to Steve 2W0JEB for bringing the cakes!.

RSGB Region 6 and 7 (Cymru) 21 MHz Challenge

(Posted 24 Feb 2025)

A reminder about the 21 MHz Challenge, which is open to all RSGB members in Cymru Wales, and to members of RSGB Affiliated clubs in either Region 6 or 7 (which includes the Rhyl & District ARC of course).

This activity takes place throughout the whole of March 2025. Everyone is encouraged to make as many QSOs as possible on the 21 MHz band, using any mode you desire.

This is not a contest in the traditional sense, so no need for a 5/9 73 qso, in fact you can ragchew as long as you like! The only restriction is that you must use a homemade resonant antenna.

There are 4 categories you can enter:

  • 100 Watt All Mode
  • 100 Watt Voice Modes Only
  • 25 Watt All Mode
  • 25 Watt Voice Modes Only
If you list the club that you are a member of, your QSOs will count towards not just your individual score, but also your club score.

Full rules, and 21 MHz Challenge Submission Form.

Certificates will be emailed to the winner and runner up in each category, and a small trophy shall be awarded to the leading club in Cymru, and a certificate for the leading club in each Region.

Please do take part in this exciting new activity being organised by the RSGB in Cymru Wales!

Club Meeting 05 Feb 2025

(Posted 05 Feb 2025)

Thanks to all that attended the club meeting this evening, and thanks to David MLI for bringing the yummy biscuits! - 2W0JEB, GW0HUS, GW0WWQ, GW1GOE, GW2HFR, GW4HDR, GW6MLI, GW7AMS, MW0GBR, MW0IDX, MW0NDE, MW1DSB, MW3BJI – I’ve got a horrible feeling I’ve forgotten somebody!??

Dave MW1DSB demonstrated his uncanny talent of fixing his old 2m FM radio by hitting it! Pity it didn’t work with his HF amplifier, which had an infinite SWR on the input, so we were unable to test it for harmonics or spurious emissions as planned. I never did get round to doing half the stuff I was intending to do, I got too busy talking to everybody. Enjoyable evening though, hope to see you all next time..

Next Club Meeting 05 Feb 2025

(Posted 29 Jan 2025)

Don't forget we have a club meeting next Wednesday, 5th February, at 7:30pm, at the Rhyl Yacht Club building, Horton Nose Lane, Kinmel Bay, Rhyl LL18 5AR (just on the Kinmel Bay side of the blue Foryd Bridge)

It seems like ages since we last had a meeting as we didn't have one in January, so we hope you can all make it. GW4HDR will be bringing his TinySA spectrum analyser again as Dave MW1DSB wants to see how it is set up when checking rigs and amplifiers. We will also have the club's QRP HF rig available, assuming the weather is OK to put up the antenna.

Hope to see you all there.

Update from our RSGB Region 6 Rep.

(Posted 26 Jan 2025)

Radio Society of Great Britain We have received a new update from Simon MW0NWM, the RSGB Regional Representative for Region 6:-

" RSGB Region 6 News

Dear RSGB Region 6 Clubs and members,

I hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to an active year of amateur radio in your clubs, at home, on holiday and out portable when the weather allows! I would like to thank those clubs I visited last year for the warm welcome I was given, and either I or one of the District Representatives look forward to visiting all clubs in the region in 2025.

There is a lot happening in our clubs throughout the region and I want to thank everyone who makes this activity happen, it is no mean feat keeping a club active.

Some highlights from our Region 6 clubs in 2024 were:

  • All clubs meeting regularly and in person.
  • Rhyl and District ARC now have a new home and meeting monthly.
  • The repeater network on the Great Orme continues to grow with the addition of GB3OD DMR repeater
  • Holy Island Amateur Radio Group now have a 70cm FM / DMR repeater
  • Several clubs are active in licence training and have registered exam centres
  • Clubs have been involved in contests and many special events including 145 Alive, International Marconi Day, Lighthouses and Lighships on the Air to name but a few!
As we are well into the first month of 2025, I look forward to hearing what clubs and individuals are planning to do this year, please do not hesitate to contact me and let me know what you are planning. Similarly, if I or the wider RSGB Region 6 Team can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us at the contact details listed at the end of this message.

RSGB Region 6 and 7 (Cymru) 21 MHz Challenge

I want to take a moment to introduce the 21 MHz Challenge, which is open to all RSGB members in Cymru Wales and to members of RSGB Affiliated clubs in either Region 6 or 7.

Taking place throughout the whole of March 2025, everyone is encouraged to make as many QSOs as possible on the 21 MHz band using any mode you desire.

This is not a contest in the traditional sense, so no need for a 5/9 73 qso, in fact you can ragchew as long as you like! The only restriction is that you must use a homemade resonant antenna. Perhaps clubs could organise a 21MHz aerial building workshop in February, or the more experienced amateurs could assist the more recently licensed!

There are 4 categories you can enter:
  • 100 Watt All Mode
  • 100 Watt Voice Modes Only
  • 25 Watt All Mode
  • 25 Watt Voice Modes Only
If you list a club you are a member of your QSOs will count towards not just your individual score, but also your club score.

Attached to this email is the full rules and a 21 MHz Challenge Submission Form.

Certificates will be emailed to the winner and runner up in each category and a small trophy shall be awarded to the leading club in Cymru and a certificate for the leading club in each Region.

Please do take part in this exciting new activity being organised by the RSGB in Cymru Wales!

Finally, a list of contact details for the team responsible for RSGB Region 6 North Wales:

Top Band activity 1920kHz

(Posted 05 Jan 2025)

There is a growing amount of interest by some of our club members on top band SSB. We tend to use 1920kHz, mainly during daylight hours when ground-wave propagation prevails, and we seem to have some very good results. If you would like to join us on top band, please remember that the power level for most of top-band is 32W PEP, even for intermediate and full licence holders. Please join in if you hear us on.

Happy New Year 2025

(Posted 01 Jan 2025)

We would like to wish all club members, and all Radio Amateurs, a very Happy and Healthy New Year for 2025.

Please note that there is no club meeting in January, as the 1st Weds of this month falls on Jan 1st (today), which is a bank holiday. Our next meeting will not be until Weds 5th February. Hope to see you all then.
